Residents, Communities Involved and External Stakeholders

Targa Canada West is a BC Interior group of car enthusiasts who know there are other "adventure tourists" willing to visit our beautiful province.

Targa Canada West is planning a series of annual competitive motorsport events – open to all makes and models of sports cars, from vintage to modern to hybrid. It happens on the twistiest tarmac you can find in the mountains of BC's Southern Interior. Competitors, volunteers and spectators enjoy the hospitality and vistas of this incredible place while competing in classes from novice to professional, all safely controlled and monitored on public roads closed for short periods during each stage of the event.

Typically, communities/residents are:

  1. Glad to know that safety is Targa's primary goal.
  2. Reassured that the event is well-planned to minimize inconvenience for residents, maximize local volunteer participation and protect people and property. Targa will be fully insured and must undergo Ministry of Transportation approval.
  3. Happy to see a boost in tourism revenue.
  4. Pleased to support and encourage motorsports in a safe & controlled event (versus illegal street racing).
  5. Interested in participating as a service provider, volunteer or competitor.
  6. Proud to host an international event – with world class drivers – in their community.
  7. Excited to experience a genuine competition of classic versus modern versus stock versus modified versus ‘green' and hybrid sports cars.

WOULD YOU LIKE A TARGA CANADA WEST EVENT IN YOUR COMMUNITY? We welcome the opportunity to discuss an event in your community, whether you are a business owner, elected official, tourism representative or motorsport enthusiaste.

WE NEED YOUR INPUT. Targa Canada West relies upon community support in order to receive approval by provincial and local governments. We want to hold a series of meetings and public information sessions in areas where the event potentially could to take place.

HOW IS THE EVENT RUN? A Targa competition occurs in segments or "stages" throughout the day, typically totalling up to 100 km. All road closure are based on community consultation and approval. One competition car is released into a stage at 30 second intervals to battle against the clock. Each stage is closed to local traffic by experienced motorsport officials. Depending on the number of competition cars entered in the event, road closures typically last from 3-8 hours. Closures of 2-5 hours typically include at least one opening for local traffic access, while Emergency vehicles and personnel will have access at ALL times.

WHO COMPETES IN TARGA? Targa is open to anyone and everyone with an interest in challenging themselves on local roads. The event attracts drivers and co-drivers from novice to expert.

IS TARGA SAFE? Targa events have an excellent safety record. To ensure the safety of the public, volunteers and competitors, Targa planning includes road assessments, application to government for temporary road closure during the event, stringent safety equipment requirements, and enforcement of speed limits for each competition class, monitored by radar.
